For a few months now, some distance relatives have been suggesting my wife and I try using Skype as a way for them to visit with our daughter in between actual visits. My wife and I were skeptical about introducting yet another technical wonder into our household. But as of yesterday afternoon, I’m inclined to change my toon.
A friend and developer who I talk with regularly, just moved to Arizona and uses Skype. He suggested I try it out as a way for us to communicate. So I downloaded it and in minutes had it installed and was video confererncing with him. I don’t yet have a web cam so I could only talk with him and see him but I was impressed by the video and audio quality, especially for a FREE service.
All you need is a broadband connection, a web cam and microphone (or headset) and obvious a computer. He uses a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 and from my research so far, it sounds like a popular one.
So you have heard about Skype and not yet tried it, give it a shot. It will make you feel like George Jetson comunicating with Mr. Sprocket in no time!
