I had the opportunity to spend the morning speaking to 5th, 6th and 7th graders about being a web site designer/developer during their annual career day. I spoke for a half hour each to three separate groups of 20 students. Students asked questions about annual salaries, education requirements and more general questions like, “What’s you favorite part of your job?” and “Is it easy to build a web site?”
I got to thinking, by the time these students are out of college and entering the work force, 10-12 years will have gone by. The Internet as we know it has evolved a lot since 1999, wonder what it will be like in 2021? I told students to be passionate about what you choose to do, and strive to be the best at what you do, what ever that is. I tried to make mention about the rise of outsourcing and automation and wanted them to keep in mind about being unique and doing work of value that a computer could never do. I got a few blank stares so I hope some of what I said today sinks in. Of course, it was hard to compete with the helicopter pilot in the room next door who happened to bring his helicopter!
