"In 2007 we had a goal to increase traffic to our website. We were contacted by an SEO company from western New York State who promised to do just that! We were going to get increased awareness on several search engines with monthly reports. After four months with no noticeable changes and no monthly reports- we fired them. I contacted Windhill Design and inquired if they do SEO work and have been working with them ever since. With their input, we have redesigned our website, added pertinent information, and increased our keywords. We have seen more website traffic, increased web sales, and higher positions on many search engines. AND I get a report every month showing where we are on the three main search engines (Yahoo, MSN, and Google). They have done a very professional job for us. We would recommend their services to anyone looking to improve their positions." Ed Fuller -Fuller’s Sugarhouse

SEO Keyword Research

Successful SEO starts with accurate keyword phrases.

Keywords and keyword phrases are the heart of any SEO effort. Without accurate keyword research, you risk optimizing for the wrong keywords and loose time and money in the process. You also risk frustrating web searches by offering up content that is not what they are looking for.

Keyword research starts will creating a list of all the variations of keywords and terms that you think a prospective site visitor would search for in order to find your web site. This is a brainstorming session so don’t hold back. Add any many words or phrases you can think of to this list. When your list is done, it’s time to go online and use some of the tools available for keyword research. Google’s AdWords Keyword Suggestion Tool and Overture(Yahoo!)’s PPC tool are some free tools to help you see what variations have the most competition and the most traffic.

Optimizing for search terms that have little or no traffic may not generate the results you desire. Optimizing for a very competitive or high traffic search term, may not be an easy task and may not be targeted enough for your web site. If you wanted to be #1 for the term ‘real estate’ and your site doesn’t cater to real estate in every corner of the globe, you risk getting visitors that can’t find what they are looking for on your site. It would also be a monumental effort to try and rank a site for such a generic, competitive term.

The recommended terms to start with are terms that define your niche well and have moderate traffic and modest competition. In following the real estate example above, terms like ‘nh lakes region real estate’ and ‘ concord nh real estate’ would be easier to rank for and less competitive because of their localized nature.

While researching keywords and search terms, you can take a look at the online competition. You can determine how optimized the competition is and make a determination if the popularity of the keyword phrase is enough to optimize for that term.

It is important to spend enough time researching keywords for your web site so that you fully understand the level of competition and have compiled a highly targeted list of phrases to optimize for.
